Volunteers from all around the East Coast came together in New York last weekend to reconnect and engage in expanding the educational programs of The Pachamama Alliance throughout their communities.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the new Getting into Action workshop, which participants both experienced and learned how to deliver to others.

This workshop provides an opportunity for people to identify their unique role in bringing forth a thriving, just, and sustainable human presence on this planet. Participants were supported to put in place the structures, practices, information, and resources that will enable them to express their commitment and sustain them as agents of change. It was a very powerful and moving event for all!

After having experienced the Getting Into Action Workshop, volunteers are now busy setting dates to bring this amazing program to their communities as a welcome and exciting new follow-up to the Symposium.

There’s a new opportunity for Symposium Facilitators and their guests to experience the magic of the Achuar people, their culture, and the Amazon rainforest – a unique Pachamama rainforest journey for Symposium Facilitators, offered at a special low price, will take place from April 8-19, 2012.

This trip will visit two very different indigenous communities. First, after gathering in Quito on April 8, the group will drive to the beautiful Quichua village of San Clemente in the Andes Highlands for two days. We will stay in the homes of indigenous families and experience the daily life of this heartfelt community and its connection with the natural world.

Then we will drive through the Andes down the famous “Avenue of the Volcanoes,” descending to the edge of the Ecuadorian rainforest. A short plane ride will take us deep into Achuar territory to stay for five days near the small Achuar village of Ti’inkias, in a special rustic lodge they have built for guests.

After our time in Ti’inkias, we’ll fly out of the rainforest and have two days of rest and integration at Hacienda Manteles, a beautiful lodge on the edge of a national park, before returning to Quito.

Throughout the journey, we will be learning deeply from the worldview, cosmology, and culture of our indigenous hosts. We’ll share in their traditional foods, music, crafts, social and spiritual life, which may include opportunities to participate in healing ceremonies with indigenous shamans.

This journey is reserved for Symposium Facilitators and their family members or guests until February 8, after which it will be opened to the general public. The special cost of this trip for active Symposium Facilitators is $2395, and $2695 for family members and guests.

Our team was quick to respond to a recent invitation to speak about transformation at Occupy Wall Street (OWS), knowing how much there is to learn from the people who make up this extraordinary phenomenon and eager also to see how best to bring the impact of the Pachamama messages to support their efforts.

On Monday, January 9th, volunteer facilitator Anita Sanchez from Boulder, Colorado and staff member Jon Symes spent two hours leading a conversation at the 60 Wall Street site in downtown Manhattan.

Local organizer and host Shanti Love said afterwards, “Tons of gratitude continues to pour for the space you facilitated at Occupy! People have expressed how energized they felt after sharing these two hours together. They said they haven’t felt that much love, acknowledgement, clarity and support since the first weeks.” It seems that new Conscious Action Circles may arise as a result of this session.

“There’s a really valuable lesson here for our community worldwide”, said Jon Symes later, “for us to go out and meet the Occupiers wherever they are and bring the conversation of the Symposium to them – with the full video impact if possible, and as a conversation where this isn’t possible”.

The Rainforest Rescue Coalition is a new non-profit that brings cycling and rainforest conservation together in a fun and innovative way.

The Coalition emerged out of the renewed sense of purpose felt by four young adults after attending the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium. Adam Bauer-Goulden is one of four founders and managing directors, along with Mary Kate Sperduto, Ross Sullivan, and Willie Heineke.

Below is an interview with Adam, held in January 2012.

Tell us about the Rainforest Rescue Coalition.

The Rainforest Rescue Coalition is a non-profit organization founded by four college students who decided to stand up and take action against the destruction of our natural world. Our mission is to conserve and protect rainforest land around the world and to promote sustainable relationships between humans and nature.

All four of us are avid bicyclists, and we share a great appreciation for nature and the intricate beauty of the rainforest. So our model is to host cross-country bike trips and to raise money for our initiatives by obtaining sponsors for our dedicated bike riders.

How did you, Mary Kate, Ross and Willie come together to create the RRC?

Along with much of today’s youth, we felt overwhelmed by the constant news of environmental devastation and the looming threat of a catastrophic collapse of ecosystems on Earth. We were tired of sitting by and watching the destruction of our planet, and we knew that we needed to do something.

After Mary Kate’s mother led us through the Awakening the Dreamer symposium we were instilled with a new sense of purpose and determination. We decided to form our own non-profit organization.

We formed a relationship with the Rainforest Conservation Fund, a very successful 501(c)(3) organization that has been working to preserve rainforests since 1988. Since we all love to ride, we figured we should base our fundraising efforts around a bike trip. After months of hard work, we have finally started raising contributions and training for our ride!

Tell us about this big ride you have coming up.

This summer we are hosting the Ride for the Rainforest, a 1,280-mile cross-country bike trip, from New Orleans to Chicago, to raise funds for two amazing projects.

Half of all contributions, above costs, will be used to purchase and protect land in the endangered Rawa Kuno Legacy Forest on the island of Borneo, which is home to over 200 of the last wild orangutans on Earth.

The other half will be used to run a sustainable agro-forestry program for the native communities living in the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo communal conservation area in the Peruvian Amazon. Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo has more species of primates than any other documented area in the world, and in one hectare of its forest you can find more species of trees than in all of North America.

What message do you want to spread about changing the dream of the modern world?

Our planet is in a dire situation and it needs your help. Presently our collective dream as a society is one of blind ambition and never-ending expansion at the expense of the natural world.

I know that we can change our ways and become the most constructive force on the planet, shepherding and guiding all of our fellow beings, whether they be plants, animals, or humans.

I encourage you to experience the Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium. It will open your eyes to the harsh reality of our current predicament, and it will inspire you to take action todayto help make a change.

The U.S. campaign to reach a total attendance of one million in the core programs of The Pachamama Alliance is being launched through community ‘roll out’ events across the country. Participants from GenUp, the Journeys program, Awakening the Dreamer facilitators and donors are coming together to be updated on the goals and strategies for The Pachamama Alliance through 2014 and engage in how they can take part.

San Diego PachaPeople hosted a Southern California roll out and have set a campaign goal of 10,000 total attendances. Seattle just completed hosting a Pacific Northwest roll out. The communities that attended are engaged in creating their next steps with the campaign.

Upcoming events are happening in NY, Boulder and Austin with many more to be scheduled across the country.

2011 has seen great achievements for The Pachamama Alliance and the Awakening the Dreamer program!

Some of our successes for 2011 include:

1. Awakening the Dreamer DVD – a way for people everywhere to share and experience a symposium on their own.
2. Brand new web sites for Awakening the Dreamer, The Pachamama Alliance and Pachamama Journeys.
3. An explosion of activity in Europe, now in Estonia, Romania, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Norway and other places.
4. New partnerships with other organizations including religious communities, coaching networks and others, with whom this work will expand rapidly.
5. A new and improved version of the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium.

We have high hopes for 2012 and some of our ambitions include:

1. Working toward our one million target for participations in our core programs, across the U.S.
2. Developing an online webinar to train and support facilitators.
3. Ensure the Getting in Action Workshop is widely offered across the world.
4. Stronger communication network for training leaders in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific.
5. Spreading our message to Latin America, China and India.
6. Breaking our target for bringing the Symposium to over 100 countries – we’re currently at 63!

Jon Symes, leading our international work on the team, says “I’m more excited than ever about the potential and reach of the Awakening the Dreamer message, and more hopeful than ever about the shifts we are seeing around us; our work is directly and indirectly contributing to the uprising of the human family.”
